Building a toroidal core from flat magnetic material does not reveal the material’s true magnetic properties. Those properties are only captured accurately when the undeformed sheet itself is measured.
That has traditionally been difficult, because magnetic characterization usually requires a closed magnetic loop; for example, with an Epstein frame or another closed-loop core configuration.
IWATSU’s patented Single Sheet Tester solves this problem. It allows users to measure a small, flat sample directly, without first having to form a closed-loop core.
In practice, this makes testing much simpler: prepare one or more same-sized samples, place them into the IWATSU Single Sheet Tester, and evaluate the results directly. The system supports the included B coils for samples up to 1 mm thickness and either up to 10 mm width (B Coil 01) or up to 30 mm width (B Coil 02).

The IWATSU Single Sheet Tester helps reveal magnetic property changes that can arise purely from sample shape and processing, even when the base material is the same. This is why single-sheet testing before machining is so important: it allows engineers to evaluate the material in its original state and avoid overlooking shape-dependent performance differences.
The example shown for Permalloy demonstrates this clearly. While coercive force (Hc) remains similar between round and oval samples, Br, Bm, and core loss differ, showing that geometry can influence the final magnetic behavior. For material development, incoming inspection, and process optimization, the IWATSU Single Sheet Tester provides valuable insight before further manufacturing steps are taken.
